The adults lingered over dinner for nearly two hours. Long before that the children grew restless and were sent off to the attic to amuse themselves by dragging out the decorations for the Christmas tree Susan and her family would decorate later that weekend. Bethany could not help noticing that the holiday—at least this holiday—was easier than it had been the year before. Was that what happened? As time passed, would she slowly let go of the grief and the memories? Or was it being in this different place—this place that did not hold any memories for her? This place where she was making new memories?

“Enough of this grown-up stuff,” Cody announced after downing his last bite of pumpkin pie. “Bethany and I are going to check on the kids.” He stood and waited. “Come on, or did you eat so much that you need help getting up?”

That brought Bethany immediately to her feet. “Race you to the attic, Mr. Three Pieces of Pie,” she retorted and had reached the first landing before Cody could work his way past the others and out of the dining room.
